Some people get a real kick out of running. Not me. In fact, if I had a decent bike that would allow me a strenuous cardio workout like running does, I'd do that instead. Of course, the bike I own sucks, so I run. Just under 3 miles this morning. And as much as I despise it, there's nothing quite like the feeling you get walking into an air conditioned house after summer morning run. Ahhhhhhhhhh.
Checked the bank account (which was running on fumes) this morning to find our paychecks deposited a day early. Nice. While there's tons of things I'd like to score on ebay much to the ridicule of my coworkers, it's time to pay some bills. Let's do the "bills jonathan has to pay this week" run-down, shall we:
Visa card
Student loan #1
Student loan #2
Sears Charge (pay off the christmas gifts, finally)
Sears Charge Plus (refrigerator)
DirecTV
Gas
Phone
DSL
Car
Car insurance
Sprint
Electric
Kicks me in the shins just looking at it.
Oh, well. Paying bills is a lot like running -- after you do it, you feel so much better. Hopefully, I'll feel that way when I'm paying for gas with rolls of pennies middle of next week.
Today is just your average thusday. Jessie is still sick and makes a trip to the doctor later today. Hope it's just the flu and nothing serious.
In closing, I'd like to congratulate lauri brian on her finally committing to something. We've been talking about playing a round golf for a little over a year now every time she's blown me off. Finally, convinced her to go. Tomorrow afternoon at 3:30, the battle of the duffers will take place at riverchase golf course in coppell. This should be a site to see...

Memorial day weekend was a busy one. Between the activities for the figliola wedding I managed to get a little done around the house and sleep in for a change. The other added bonus to having a three day weekend is it makes this week that much shorter.
The fun really started on saturday when the boys in the wedding party met up for breakfast followed by a little racing action at TBC. I finished second while hero took the checkered flag on the final heat. There's some great pictures of the winners circle, but I haven't got 'em just yet. Later that afternoon we had the rehearsal and dinner at monica's afterward. Jessie and I opted not to stay in deep ellum late into the night.
Spent most of the day on sunday sitting on a warm couch watching the indy 500. Helio Castroneves, the goofy brazilian won for the second consecutive year in a row. Watching the post race celebration was a trip. I really like that guy. He just seems a little less cocky than some of the other indy pricks and seems genuinely humbled winning for the second time in as many starts. Great race.
Sunday night, the wedding went off without a hitch and I had the chance to see some old friends from back in sfs days at the reception. After a long night of partying and wearing a monkey suit I was happy for jonathan and robin and happy it was over. I was pooped. I slept in late on monday and spent the rest of the day doing yardwork and playing with the mutts.
Tuesday morning came too quick and I spent most of the day surfing for flash inspiration and taking care of some loose ends on the nightmare client. Jessie's down with a nasty sore throat and after a trip to the doctor yesterday for a diagnosis, she's still not sure what she's got other than a high fever and a swollen throat. I feel her pain.

Still continuing the fun run training and conditioning I set out for at the beginning of the month. This morning I ran just shy of three miles with little rest in between. I've never been a strong runner, so I'm happy with the effort. We'll see if I can beat last years time come june 8th.
Work is kinda weird right now. There's a buttload of projects "waiting in the wings" that I'm supposed to be working on, but nothing's really rolling just yet. The nightmare client I was once happy to be working with has been moved off my plate through no fault of my own. I can only do so much to please a client and I guess it just didn't work out. Kinda sucks considering my track record, but it's probably for the best. Pisses me off the more I think about it, but I only hope the poor soul who's been assigned the creative duties can find a way to make that crazy biatch happy. Godspeed, LM.
In other news, this weekend is the big wedding and the figliolas have planned out an activity for every hour of the weekend almost. Well, I'm exaggerating, but it's going to be a busy weekend that starts tonight at a getting-to-know you-dinner at Liberty Noodle. Hopefully the office will close a little early today and jessie and I will make it in time for the 7:30 start. Gotta pick up the tuxedo at lunch.
I've had three different people send me this little gem over the last few days. I guess it reminds them of me, but I assure you, I do not act out scenes from the phantom menace and play star wars stratego while standing in line outside the movie theatre. Funny stuff, though. Funny stuff.

How many more days 'til payday? This weekend left me drained -- physically and financially. But what fun it was...
Saturday, I spent the whole day coordinating and enjoying fig's bachelor party. An unusually mild day for mid-may, we had temperatures in the low 70's with a strong north wind. Of course, we didn't realize it would be so cold a month in advance when we planned the day, but it beat hundred degree weather, I guess. The strong wind made lake lewisville choppy as can be. We took advantage of the less than crowded lake to get a good four hours of skiing in since we had the lake to ourselves (almost). Most of the boys opted for the kneeboard while I gave the skis a shot. I haven't skied in about 8 years so I was surprised when I got above the water on the second try. The unbelievable thing was when we convinced the cone the kneeboard was worth a shot. Before we know it, he's jumped in the water and shows us all how it's done; jumping wakes and pulling his best tony hawk impression on a kneeboard. Not bad for a guy from ft worth.
After we all burned ourselves to a crisp on the lake, we returned to my house around 6:00 and hung out for a while before we started the evenings activities. Four hours and four large pizzas later, the cab showed up and we spent the remainder of the night at the lodge. Jonathan had a good time as we managed to keep him busy most of the night downing shots and tipping scantily-clad women. I determined after two vodka tonics and $31 less that I'm either in the wrong business or there's just a lot of rich dudes with disposable income out there. Let me repeat that --- $31 for two drinks.
On saturday morning I stopped off at a garage sale on the way to the gym and bought a used breadmaker for a whopping ten bucks. What the heck, I thought... Jessie and I made our monthly trip to central market last night and we bought the ingredients to make a loaf o' bread. I was impressed me managed to whip up a perfect loaf on the first try. Go ahead and make fun of me if you will, but fresh bread is mighty tasty. Mmmmm... fresh bread.
In closing, I walked in the office friday morning and got a visit from ruben who asked me if he got that picture he sent last week via email. Last week, ruben sent attached this picture to an email and a message saying "This makes me want a costume like yours......" I laughed and told him how a friend of mine took that picture at rockfest about 5 years ago and how funny we always thought it was. Ruben got a strange look on his face and said "that's really you?!?!" "Of course", I said -- "didn't you get that off my site?". Turns out he was surfing fark.com and came across the photo after someone submitted it to the photoshop this section. Here's the result. I laughed my ass off friday morning and couldn't believe that I was actually a meme for five minutes. Don't know how I got there, but funny stuff none the less.

Still recovering from the busy week that just passed me by. I've spent the last seven days in three different time zones and boarded six different airliners traveling from the west to the east and back in dallas in between. I'm ready for the weekend and a chance to sleep late for a change.
The meeting in the exciting town of east aurora NY went pretty well. It was pointless for me to attend considering the issues laid out on the table could have easily been solved with a phone call. I guess sometimes it's just better to have a little face time with the people who pay your bills.
We stayed in a really neat bed and breakfast called the roycroft inn on tuesday night. Apparently the roycrofters were a group of famous artisans who had a strong influence in design around the prairie style and arts and crafts periods in america near the turn of the century. The roycroft inn was built in 1905 and restored in 1995 and featured a unique historical perspective of the movement. Tom Rau knew quite at bit about the period and even had some pieces that were true roycroft design. Maybe he's cultured after all and not just a terrorist.
Tomorrow is fig's bachelor party. I'm looking forward to a good nights sleep tonight and follow it up with a day on the lake and night on the town with the boys.
Episode ii opened yesterday and so far the public reviews have been great. Everyone agrees that yoda steals the show and the film "feels" much more like a star wars film. The entire creative group went to go see it over lunch yesterday on the company's dime. I might have gone, but I had too much work to do. I'll see it again soon, though -- guaranteed.

I got a surprise phone call from blair yesterday morning asking me perhaps one of the dumbest questions anyone's ever asked me. It goes like this:
"Hey, man... annie has an extra ticket for a sneak preview showing of episode ii tonight in plano. Do you wanna go?"
Hmm... let me think about that.. how about "HELL YES!"
What luck! I spent the entire day gloating and make certain people who live in austin a bit jealous. :) After a long day at work taking the never ending beating from the impossible-to-please client, I took off for plano and got to the tinseltown at parker and the tollway around 6:30. Annie works for general mills who did a cereal promotion that involved episode ii so the entire office (and a few lucky guests) were treated to an advance screening monday evening. Needless to say I was thrilled to be there.
So after all was said and done, I was impressed, but also disappointed, too. I don't know -- part of me hates to even say the slightest negative comment given my lifelong addiction to SW, but sometimes I think the "flanneled one" tries too hard to wow everyone with an overdose of digital eye candy. It's not as if I was expecting the cgi to be scaled back after TPM, but I continually found myself almost distracted by the effects. I think that's what truly makes the original trilogy so great -- It had impressive effects that were truly ground breaking at the time and it they didn't get in the way of the story. I just felt episode ii relied too heavily on the effects. (the effects were impressive, though) Not only that, there was a little too much going on in my opinion for the two hour movie. Maybe I'll change my mind after a day or two to think about it.
It did have it's moments, though. I won't give anything away, but there's a lot of action and the few memorable scenes are real gems. I still highly recommend it and I'll be curious to see how the public responds. I'm just glad I got the see it early and didn't have the fanatic geeks waving lightsabers and cheering every five minutes in front of me. I didn't hear half of episode i the first day I saw it -- too many loudmouth geeks. And no -- I did not wear the boba fett costume, thank you.
Today I leave for new york on business to deal with the above said client. Any other time of the year, I'd be halfway excited about the chance to travel, but after the beating I took this weekend I'd just assume stay home.
UPDATE: after sleeping on it, I'd say my opinion is a little less negative this morning the more I think about it. It's episode ii, it's star wars and it rocked. I'll get over the other stuff...

Back to the grind. Only this time, I'm broke, tired and feel like I just got the crap beat out of me. Or maybe I should say "craps" beat out of me instead.
I hate vegas.

There's a scene in Vegas Vacation, where an overzealous clark w. griswold gambles his entire bankroll away on the strip and decides to try his luck outside the city in a hole-in-the-wall casino. Playing ridiculous games like "guess the number between 1 and 10" and paper, rock, scissors, he soon finds out that no matter where he gambles or what games he chooses, there's no luck on his side. That's the way I feel right now.
I've had runs of bad luck in casinos before, but I think yesterday was the record for me. My short run yesterday morning was followed with a beating where I every bet I placed was destined to end up in those huge stacks of chips on the dealers table. Of course, as soon as I decided to step away and cool off, the tables would get hot again. Lucky me. Oh well. I know well enough by now not to expect to come home any richer than when I left. Right now I'd settle for just making my money some of my money back. Damn.
Of course, the real reason I'm here is for blair and annie's wedding, which takes place this evening at the TPC in north las vegas. We had the rehearsal dinner last night at Mon Ami Gabi (french for "uppity steakhouse") at the paris casino. Jeff and I felt a little out of place since we were just the lowly ushers, but we had a good time anyway.
After dinner we decided to head downtown via a $20 cab ride and try our luck at the old school casinos. Rumor has it the slots are a little looser downtown and the payouts on table games offer better odds. I believe that when I see it. An hour later, my budget for the night was blown and I was ready to hit the sack and cut my losses. I think I'll save myself the trip next time and just stay on the strip -- better people watching here, anyway.

Viva Las Vegas!!!
Or should I say, Viva-take-all-my-money and call me a loser. Jeez-Louise. I go up, I go down. I win big, I lose big. So far the bleeding's not too bad, but I can't seem to get ahead and considering I've not even been here 24 hours, I need to find a good luck charm.
Jeff and I arrived at the Aladdin last night around 7:30 after a delayed flight from dallas. This is the first time I've traveled with the powerbook, so we made good use of the dvd player and watched the mummy returns. What a crappy movie. After arriving, we made a trip to the rio for the all-you-can-eat lobster and seafood buffet. I never thought I'd get sick of lobster tail, but after about 4 trips to the buffet line I had my fill. Ugh.
Come to find out, this luxurious hotel isn't doing so well. According to the dealers and cab drivers, the hotel is over 160 million in the hole and just filed chapter 11. Makes since considering a hotel with a middle-eastern theme probably isn't the best idea in the world right now. Bad timing, I guess.
Blair (boy wonder) had his bachelor party last night. We caught the tail end of it and I stayed up late loosing money at the craps table. I got to bed a little before 3:00. This morning, I grabbed a starbucks and managed to turn 20 bucks into $160. Of course a quick trip to the blackjack table and well, you know the rest of the story (see above)
I'm about to head off for lunch. I'll be posting pics real soon. Stay tuned and keep your fingers crossed for me. Congratulations, Jim!!!

Class is finally over. I had final review with the faculty yesterday to go over my student's work from this semester. I was somewhat apprehensive at first, and there were some things I could've done better, but all in all they were very pleased with the work produced. They even went so far to let me know many of the students said great things about me (probably for the free beer) and if an opening should present itself in the fall they'd like to have me back.
So the summer is soon upon us and with it come the annual events that I look forward to every year. Things like 100 degree temperatures, an increase in golf and outdoor activities and of course the annual fun run. In exactly one month from today, jessie and I will attempt to run 5k as fast as we can and see if we both survive the ordeal. I ran it last year in around 27 minutes and I'd like to beat that this year if at all possible. I started my training this morning with a 2 mile run through the park and I'll steadily increase my distance over the next month. Gotta stay the course on this one.
Tomorrow I leave for vegas and I haven't even begun to prepare for the trip. Tonight I'll spend a few hours getting things together and try to mow the yard before the weekend weeds take over. Speaking of yard work; after installing the bird feeder last week to make the front webcam a little more interesting, we caught the culprit who'd been pigging out on the birdseed. Check the little acrobatic bastard out. Film at eleven.

Based on the overall hype and crowded theater on friday, I had a feeling spidey would do great things this weekend. Who'da thought it would set the all-time record for a single day showing, fastest to the century mark and the largest opening weekend ever with $114 million in three days. Impressive. What's even more impressive is the movie itself with a great mix of action, humor and romance. Looks like episode ii has a big shadow to open under and I'm willing to be even it won't do as well a spiderman did this weekend.
Spent most of the weekend in the company of others. Saturday, I attended an A&M alumni crawfish boil and beer fest held at the Yucatan liquor stand off beltline with todd and bart. They both went to A&M, so they could identify with the obese crowd of former aggies gorging on mudbugs and beer. Me, I had a good time, but spent most of it playing an addicting golf game called golden tee with a bunch of trash talkers who let me take their money. I entered ten bucks in a raffle and found out yesterday I actually won one of the many prizes they had to offer -- four tickets to a concert at the smirnoff center, $20 in food from canyon cafe and an A&M tennis shirt that's too large to fit me. I sure hope there's something better to see this summer than the scorpions or barry manilow at smirnoff. Their current concert calender sucks.
A heavy rain fell yesterday morning making the back yard a mud pit once again, but by 8:00 the rain had stopped and the sun came out for a while. Jessie and I took off for some chinese food at cathy's wok and paid a visit to the dallas arboretum (or as I like to call it the dallas ar-be-tor-e-um -- just sounds better that way). :) We took our time walking the ground and jessie continued to impress me with her gardening knowledge as she identified several of the exotic plants scattered throughout. I knew the azaleas when I saw them -- that's what my mom likes to grow. I took some shots of the photogenic playground and posted them here.
Today it's back to work. Jim's about to be out for a few weeks with the birth of his baby girl and I need to make sure I'm in the loop on anything I might be taking over on. Good luck with your kiddo there, jimbo -- we're all counting on you.

Golden Tee 2003 rocks the casba. I played a couple games last night with todd and bart at the smokiest bar in north dallas -- sterling's. 3 bucks a game adds up.
Tonight my students turn in their final assignment then I'm taking them out for a much deserved round of drinks at cool beans. The first one's on me, after that they're on their own. Then it's a mad dash to grade everything and have it ready for their review on tuesday at 7:30 AM. That's too early to be in denton...
Why does everyone give me hell all the time? Is it because I'm a good sport about it, or an easy target. Probably both.
Congratulations to the cone on being a daddy. That's pretty damn cool, if not completely weird. I'm sure he'll be a good one.
