Maui: Molokini Snorkeling

Molokini is a small crescent-shaped island just offshore the southwestern part of Maui. Once the tip of a volcano crater millions of years ago, the reef creates a perfect shelter for tropical fish and birds against the harsh currents coming into the harbor. Molokini is known as one of the best snorkel spots in Hawaii and every day hundreds of tourists on dozens of boats tour the island to see the reef up close.

I booked my cruise online and left early saturday morning. After boarding the ship and making the trip on rough seas, I was more than a little disappointed. Molokini is a complete tourist trap and depending on when you go, the odds of seeing hundreds of tropical fish like the brochures all say is rare. The water was so choppy that morning half the passengers got seasick and the rough waters made snokeling near impossbile. Not wanting the trip to be a complete wash, I paid the extra money to "snuba" and got a good look at the floor of the crater. Not much to see even 40 feet below. All-in-all it wasn't worth it and I wouldn't recommend spending half a day of your vacation to see Molokini -- there are better spots to snorkel around Maui for free.

On the way back we stopped at "turtle town", a spot in the harbor where sea turtles surface and I got a few shots of the green guys coming up for air. That was neat to see... seeing 3 dozen people puking overboard wasn't. I'm just glad I held it all in that morning. :)
