Maui: North Maui Hikes

After the Molokini excursion, I was pretty exausted. I hadn't got much sleep since I got to the island and before departing on a new adventure I took a quick nap to reenergize. I planned for a strenueous day of hiking in north maui and I needed the cat nap.

Around noon, I woke up and bought groceries for a picnic lunch from the drug store next door. I packed my gear, filled the water jug and headed west toward Ka'anpali to check out the other side of maui I read so much about in my guide books. Maui Revealed is a very valuable resource for anyone wanting to hike maui. This helpful book pointed out many hidden treasures along the coast and I had to decide which ones to see and which ones to check out next time. There's just too much to see in one afternoon. :)

I took a lot of photos during my trek and they turned out to be some of the finest shots from the trip. The views from the coast were astonishing. The west side of the island is much more rocky and its volcanic past is on display everywhere. Good thing I brought my tripod with me.

After spending about 4 hours exploring the coast, I drove around the north side of the island back to Kahului Bay by the airport then headed back south to Lahaina as the sunset. It was during the drive I stopped to take one of my favorite photos from the entire trip: the beautiful rainbow nestled in the West Maui mountains.

What a wonderful day of discovery.
